Humanity boasts an uncanny ability to foresee and exorcise every imaginable peril. Yet, when faced with the prospect of constructing a brighter tomorrow, our wellspring of ingenuity appears to run dry. Why is it that the fertile ground where threats blossom so readily yields such a meagre harvest of encouraging possibilities? Should not the same boundless creativity that drives us to vanquish dangers also set us in motion to build a more flourishing present?
We promise to relentlessly pursue better on behalf of our communities and the planet. That’s why we choose to only work with organisations and businesses that share our values and beliefs. We will always speak truth to power.
We seek to work with those who are willing to embrace and adopt a novel mentality, in hopes of realising a better world. We know this is difficult work.
We exist to harness the collective genius of our people - at home and in the diaspora - to break new ground and create an alternative framework. And, as a result, to liberate us from inequalities and injustices that hinder our stability and growth.
We are developing a collective model, wholly owned by those who build it.
The goal? Social emancipation.
Our Vision: we will be the transdisciplinary, think-and-do, people-owned collective emerging from Africa.
Intellectually | we refuse to simply publish reports. We want to create and share knowledge that is meaningful and authentic if we are to create a different reality. In practical terms, this could be a podcast, groundbreaking investigations and research, online and in-person communities, mentorship, or partnerships with like-minded journals, publications, thinkers, writers, scholars, institutes, and organisations.
Socially | how do we create a better life for the vulnerable, marginalised, and materially poor in our communities? We will attempt to address this in two ways — to take on projects with organisations that are critically aligned with our ethos and to support those organisations or communities defending the most vulnerable (usually silently working in the background).
Politically /though we do not affiliate ourselves with political parties, politicians and advocacy groups need assistance to carry out their duties. Here, we serve as public servants, building their capacities (we, of course, are selective) — from advocacy support to research and policy to strategic communications. We’re deeply experienced in the political arena, so we’ll know who aligns well with us.
Economically / though we reject capitalism, we must operate within it—for now. We also do not engage in activities or work with entities that maintain the status quo. We prioritise local businesses and local craftspeople. As a company, we will create meaningful employment + ownership opportunities, in hopes of attaining economic security for us and our families. Our actions must be oriented towards addressing injustices and uplifting the most vulnerable.
Our Mission: to bring together under a collective, visionary professionals from across our trusted networks to elevate our communities intellectually, socially, politically, and economically.
Nullius in Verba. Which means nothing in words. It’s easy to talk ad nauseam without getting meaningful things done. We recognise that doing something meaningful is difficult work. We are relentless in this noble pursuit.
Fulfilment. When we create an environment where we have a chance at fulfilment, we are already substantially improving the world.
The Difficult Road. Most opportunities, often from self-serving sources, promise quick money and use deceptive green or bluewashing tactics. We reject these. We're committed to local infrastructure serving our long-term interests. This road is long and difficult.
Interconnectedness. We foster interconnected relationships where collaboration and generosity thrive. We reject competition and scarcity mindsets, instead viewing shared resources as the foundation for making a meaningful impact.
Creativity. We celebrate innovation and imagination as our success drivers. A culture of creativity enables us to adapt, evolve, and inspire, unlocking new possibilities and redefining boundaries.
Integrity. Being honest and having strong moral principles, even when it is inconvenient or when no one is watching. Integrity involves consistently adhering to high ethical standards and values. It encompasses honesty, transparency, and a commitment to doing what is right, by our standards. This also includes intellectual honesty. And yes, even it means we forego funding opportunities.
Joy and Humour. These are critical.
We bring joy and humour to our work—both in our relationships and in what we create. Playfulness, humour, and warmth are purposeful and support our learning and connection with one another.
Audacity. Audacity does not mean recklessness or blind optimism. It embodies the courage to embrace and navigate uncertainty. It is about possessing an unwavering belief in yourself and your vision, propelling you to take bold steps toward your goals, even when others express doubt.
Humility. Our starting point? We are aware of our lack of knowledge and that life is but an exploration of truths. This is in line with Article II of our Charter. We leave no room for pride in our thinking or in our practice.
Small is Beautiful. If we grow, we grow steadily and intentionally. Perhaps nothing captures our thinking on this than Wim Wender’s masterpiece, Perfect Days. Watch the trailer here.
First Principles Thinking. First principles thinking unearths novel solutions, driving our pursuit of excellence. We dissect complex problems into basic truths to innovate and resolve issues clearly. By examining assumptions and addressing root challenges, we foster creativity and critical analysis.
Service. Service is our mission's core, enriching lives with compassion, dedication, and selflessness. By prioritising service, we build trust and meaningful connections, making a lasting positive impact with empathy and integrity.
It's not just about what we do, but how we do it—with empathy, integrity, and a genuine desire to make a difference in the lives of others.
Agility. Agility is about embracing flexibility, continuously learning, and swiftly responding to evolving circumstances with creativity and resourcefulness.
Umòja. Which means unity in Swahili. We stand united against all forms of injustice and oppression—whether deliberate or otherwise. Umòja breeds strength.
Be Present. In a bustling world, we value being present—showing up fully, listening deeply, and caring genuinely.
By being present, we make our journey together more worthwhile.
Public Recognition is Vanity. What truly matters is the quality of our work and its impact on our communities. We value our collective effort and the meaningful difference we make together.
Cultivate Critical Thinking. Because this is the start to transcending the status quo.
Reflection. Amidst superficiality, we prioritise intentionality and reflection, embracing authenticity and depth. Mindfulness guides our actions with clarity and integrity, and in doing so, we not only stay true to ourselves but also inspire others to do the same.
Hope. The world can discourage us — failing organisations, failing societies, growing individualism. We work contrary to these forces, where hope is woven into the fabric of our core values, serving as a beacon of optimism and resilience.
Greatness. We push beyond mediocrity to achieve remarkable outcomes. We cultivate a culture of excellence where each endeavour is marked by intent, passion, and unparalleled dedication to mastery.
Work in Silence. True excellence arises from unwavering dedication and a firm commitment to our responsibilities, allowing our work to naturally command recognition. By nurturing a culture that prioritises quiet diligence over ostentatious displays, we empower each team member to deliver their utmost, thereby driving innovation and achieving success discreetly and effectively.
Our Values: we uphold a distinct set of values, forming the foundation of our work. Our primary commitment to ourselves and each other is to strive to exemplify these values in our daily interactions and relationships as we embark together on our journey.
The greater power is, the more quietly it works. .
It just happens. It has no need to draw attention to itself.
